Abstract

To speak English fluently like a native speaker, having a vocabulary of 20,000 words are required. In many universities in Indonesia, Vocabulary Size Test (VST) is still held with Paper-Based Test (PBT), so it is less effective and efficient. The aims of this study were 1) to develop Computerized-Adaptive Testing (CAT), which helps get students with a standardized English vocabulary size, and 2) to implement it in measuring vocabulary size. The approach in this study is Research and Development (RD) with product development procedures following the steps of Borg and Gall. The findings of this study are, 1) the CAT program has Item Response Theory (IRT) parameters that can change according to the test takers' answers, and the test will stop if the estimated ability of the test takers is known (Standard Error/SE close to 0.01), and 2) with the application of the CAT program it can be seen that the total vocabulary of English Language and Teaching Department students is still 20,000. Based on these findings, this study implies that for students' vocabulary mastery to be on par with native speakers' abilities, the English Language and Teaching Department needs to evaluate the learning process and determine a particular program to increase student vocabulary.

Abstract

Brain-based Learning has been recognized for its potential to foster creative and innovative pedagogical approaches. Despite this, the relevance and potential impact of this model with the independent curriculum remains relatively unexplored by previous research. This study seeks to address this gap by investigating and analyzing the relevance and benefits of integrating Brain-based Learning within the independent curriculum framework in Indonesia. Employing a Systematic Literature Review referred to the 2020 PRISMA guidelines, we obtained 2013 articles from Scopus and Google Scholar databases but only 48 articles met the eligibility criteria for further analysis using the meta-synthetic analysis method. Results indicate the relevance between Brain-based Learning and the principles of differentiated learning inherent to the independent curriculum. By focusing on the natural system of the brain, Brain-based Learning enhances the efficacy of the curriculum, yielding enjoyable, meaningful, and beneficial learning experiences for students. This underscores the potential of Brain-based Learning as a driving force for the success of the independent curriculum in overcoming educational challenges in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aimed to assess high school student’s understanding of Banjarmasin by Rasch modeling, preci-sely the cognitive aspect. The research method was descriptive with a quantitative approach to assess the pattern of reactions and symptoms of Rasch data. According to the research findings, the person reliability (students) was +0.66 based on the Rasch modeling analysis, with the criterion satisfactory, indicating that the students knowledge was adequate. At the same time, Cronbachs’ alpha score had a value of +0.71 and met the criteria of excellent. In addition, the students with the highest level of understanding were coded 127P12B with a logit value (person measure) of 2.52 and average students with logit value of -0.77 or 0. In contrast, the students with low abilities were coded 030P10B and 059L11B (same logit value, -3.27 or 0). Other data were INFIT MNSQ and OUTFIT MNSQ (person) with average values of +0.99 and +1.14 (closer to 1, the better), while the INFIT and OUTFIT ZSTD values were -0.1 and 0.0 respectively (closer to 0, better). The most difficult question was Q16, which had a logit score of 1.96; students’ logit values carried this question. Students were regarded to have appropriate knowledge even though their ability excee-ded the problem ability. In conclusion, the Rasch model-based pre-learning evaluation was found to be useful in measuring students’ cognitive grasp of chemical bonding material. This study could serve as the primary reference for teachers in assessing students’ level of knowledge before they begin learning. In addi-tion to interpreting student knowledge through various Rasch data presentations, a study of the structure of questions with varying difficulty levels could be used to assess the full group of students’ understanding of chemistry.

Abstract

The courage to take risks to open a new business has not been fully embedded in most technical education students. One of the influences is low student self-efficacy due to a lack of self-confidence in students who think there is a failure in opening a new business. So this research examines and analyzes in-depth related entrepreneurial interest as measured through self-efficacy, family, and university environment in technical education students. The probability sampling method using a random sampling technique was used in taking a sample of 450 participants in technical education students. The most dominant item in representing the success of entrepreneurial interest is creativity at 84.80%. The weakest construct is the never-give-up construct of 71.50%. The ability of the structural model to explain Entrepreneurial Interest is 61.80%, while the Entrepreneurial Interest variable explains 50.50% of the phenomena predicted in the field. The path analysis test reveals that the three variables influence the interest in entrepreneurship positively and significantly. This study recommends that universities foster an interest in entrepreneurship by providing technical assistance in developing businesses, inviting entrepreneurial speakers, holding industrial visits, and conducting training programs. These steps are expected to foster student interest in entrepreneurship.

Abstract

Flores Island is vulnerable towards natural disasters. Therefore, it requires an effective disaster warning ma-nagement. In this context, schools play an important role in disaster warning system. However, not all schools implement Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) procedures effectively. Therefore, efforts are needed to improve disaster warning system among schools by integrating the three pillar principles, which include safe facilities, effective disaster management, and resilience education. This study aims to understand the state of school readiness in the Flores region and assess the extent to which these schools apply the three pillar criteria for school disaster warning system. The research method used is a qualitative descriptive ap-proach, with data collection through an open questionnaire distributed using Google Forms. The result showed that the locations of the respondent's schools are spread across the most disaster-prone areas of Flo-res, especially along the coastal areas. In addition, there are still many schools in the region that have diffe-rent levels of understanding and awareness regarding to disaster warning system. Based on that issue, the program for activating the disaster warning system in school area is very important to apply and can increase public awareness of disaster warning system. To achieve that idea, a collaboration between school commit-tees, external parties, and the Flores community is essential to strengthen the school infrastructure and to build an effective response towards potential disaster risks and threats.

Abstract

Emerging Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT offer considerable promise for enhancing professional development in higher education. This study focuses on the experiences of early-career lecturers who utilise ChatGPT for professional development. Central questions explore ChatGPT's influence on their overall professional experience and the challenges and benefits of its use. While research on AI in education has been growing, few studies have delved into the specific experiences of young academics using ChatGPT. This study employed qualitative methods to address this gap, pre-cisely 45- to 60-minute in-depth interviews with two purposively selected lecturers, followed by a thematic analysis using a grounded theory approach. Our findings reveal a multifaceted landscape: on the one hand, ChatGPT enhances the ability to construct intricate academic arguments, increases effi-ciency in research and teaching tasks, and heightens critical thinking capabilities. Conversely, chal-lenges such as initial technical hurdles, occasional incorrect outputs, and concerns about over-dependency were also highlighted. Through this investigation, the study contributes to the broader discourse on AI in education by illustrating both the promising opportunities and potential pitfalls of using ChatGPT in academia. The study underscores the need for a balanced approach to AI adoption. It offers insights into the role of AI tools like ChatGPT in shaping the future of professional development in higher education.

Abstract

This study aimed to introduce Nusantara culture based on educational games by adjusting students' learning styles. Culture as an ancestral heritage tradition needs to be preserved by introducing it to the younger gen-eration from an early age. However, the survey results found that less than 26% of student respondents un-derstood Nusantara culture well. Compared to previous research, the model of cultural introduction through adaptive educational games is more fun because it is adapted to the way students learn. This research was carried out using the Design-Based Research (DBR) method through 4 stages of the procedure. The feasibil-ity test and application effectiveness test were carried out on a group of students from several elementary schools in Indonesia, who were taken using a cluster random sampling technique. The results of media design and content validation obtained an average value of 0.76 and 0.82, which means that the media is declared valid. The feasibility test used the System Usability Scale (SUS) with an average value of 80% in the acceptable category. The results of the research obtained a description of the comparison of the final scores of the control class and the experimental class, which was 55 compared to 75. This study concluded that learning media for introducing Indonesian culture based on adaptive educational games had a positive impact by effectively increasing learning outcomes on students' understanding of Indonesian culture. Further development of this game application can be expanded in the application of animation in more depth.
